Chivas Brothers is the Scotch whisky and premium gin business of Pernod Ricard, the world’s co-leader in wines and spirits. Chivas Brothers produces, exports and markets some of the world’s best known and highest quality malts, blends and premium gins.
Chivas Brothers has 13 operating malt distilleries, two gin distilleries and over 3000 bonded warehouses. Chivas Brothers is a leading employer with 1,600 staff across 29 sites in the UK, with headquarters in Paisley, Scotland.
Chivas Brothers partnered with MCSA to undertake a storage area network and disaster recovery upgrade using HPE technology. This move has created a highly efficient, cost-effective and available storage environment for Chivas Brothers.
IT plays a major role in underpinning Chivas Brothers’ operations and investment in fresh technology is important for the business. The company’s data storage estate had reached a performance plateau. Chivas Brothers’ IT team felt that a complete overhaul of its HPE EVA estate was required.
Chivas Brothers decided to initiate a complete storage area network refresh project. This involved replacing its HPE EVA fibre channel disc storage platform, covering services for key business applications. These applications run mostly MS wndows operating systems.
A flexible and scaleable solution was required that delivered additional workloads, and addressed data protection and availability requirements – across all three data centres.
MCSA’s team worked very closely with the HPE and Chivas Brothers’ MIS team to propose the new 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage platform, with bi-directional replication to Chivas Brothers’ Scottish-based DR and London sites.
The HPE technology promised more benefits than other solutions and has a proven record of delivering the best storage efficiencies and performance. Cost was also key for Chivas Brothers and the solution was deemed as best value. The HPE and MCSA account teams undertook a data gathering exercise to observe the capacity and utilisation of the current HPE arrays.
The figures obtained were used as the basis of the new storage solution’s sizing. Also included, was an application integration suite for VMware, SQL and Oracle, to provide improved recovery points and shorter recovery time objectives.
The solution was tailored to achieve in excess of what Chivas Brothers required – with quicker project delivery and minimal potential risks.
Chivas Brothers now has a leading-edge, highly efficient, cost-effective and available storage environment. A better end-user experience is being achieved, with faster data access times for Chivas Brothers’ end-users.
Les Gilfillan, Network Manager at Chivas Brothers said, “The MCSA and HPE teams really helped us with their technical skills and highly effective planning to ensure that the project was delivered smoothly – on time and budget. We now possess a flexible, high performing and available storage environment.”
