3 technology trends driving digital transformation for SMEs

Software as a Service (SaaS)

SaaS will allow SMEs to access large scale solutions for lower costs than previously available. In the past a business would have to buy software licences and expensive support contracts upfront while having to guess how many users would be using the software in the months to come. Now there are many products that offer a pay as you go model. These are attractive to SMEs who need to scale up and down in an ever-changing business landscape.

The benefits of SaaS are increased choice, cost saving and increased business continuity – the software can be accessed securely from anywhere in the world and will survive power cuts and other interruptions to HQ, meaning that business can always carry on.

Bring your own device (BYOD) and internet of things (IOT)

Long talked about, both BYOD and IOT are now reaching maturity in the market with offerings from large scale enterprise providers such as vmware’s Airwatch and Microsoft’s Intune.

The main benefits of BYOD are increasing staff productivity and reducing hardware costs – why should it matter if someone likes to use an iPhone or an Android phone, or a Windows Device or an iMac? With IOT SMEs will look to try and use new sensors and equipment to improve efficiency.

For businesses, one of the main concerns with both these trends is securing and managing your end points. Be sure to be aware of potential risks in security and wasting money if these technologies are not implemented and managed properly.

IT outsourcing 

This trend is really a means of embracing new ways of working and allowing your business to get the best from the latest technology. Managed Service Providers now offer a range of solutions to suit any SME and the way they want to work.

In the past a company may have seen IT as simply its computer hardware, but that is not the case anymore. Organisations need to be live 24/7 or risk losing revenue, so their IT provision must account for this. In essence, a good Managed Service Provider will allow an SME to be better at their own business while they look after the nuts and bolts of the IT infrastructure.
