Three reasons to get involved with an IT apprenticeship


If you are just about to leave school or are beginning to think about your future, making your first career choice can feel a little overwhelming. But if the thought of university or college doesn’t appeal to you, perhaps an apprenticeship scheme is more up your street?

We spoke to Susan Mullerworth, our HR Manager here at MCSA, to find out why more young people should consider an IT apprenticeship as the next step in their career path.


‘A foot in the door’

The IT industry is competitive and fast-paced, making it the perfect place to learn new skills and develop existing ones. Many IT companies are always looking for ways to introduce new blood into the business, which is exactly why MCSA decided to launch their own scheme in 2011. Many of our apprentices have either stayed with us and still work for the company today, or have gone on to succeed in other companies. Either way, an apprenticeship is a great place to start if you are looking to gain experience, qualifications and get your foot in the door of the IT industry.


Freedom to specialise

You might think that you are ‘tied’ into an apprenticeship for the duration of the course, but you might have more freedom than you think. We give our apprentices the freedom to choose which areas of the business they want to specialise in after they have completed their basic qualifications. As their courses progress, they often take a natural path in the direction they want to head – for example, security or hybrid IT. This enables us to tailor the course depending on each individual apprentice, giving them the most valuable experience possible.


Closing the IT skills gap

As companies become more and more reliant on technology to support their business , the demand on the IT services industry is ever increasing. There has been a lot of coverage in the press about the IT skills gap, something which is of great concern to all companies in the IT industry. By taking an apprenticeship, you will learn new, relevant skills that will help contribute to the future success of the company. The apprentice levy will stimulate more options for apprentices; this is good news for young men and women looking for a real opportunity for personal growth.  For MCSA it will mean we will place greater emphasis on this as a way of recruiting new talent to train and nurture to provide the next generation of skilled staff.


A two way relationship

MCSA’s own apprenticeship schemes have been very successful. It is important to remember that any apprenticeship scheme is a two way relationship. The apprentices that pass through the doors will get a wealth of knowledge, skills and training during their time at the company, but the company also benefits. They bring their energy, new ideas and fresh outlook which in turn helps to secure the future of the industry.
