With the future of OpenVMS now more secure following the deal between HPE and VSI (VMS Software Inc.) to provide future development and support of this very reliable and established operating system, many users are considering their options on which hardware platform they will continue to run upon.
Many older versions of OpenVMS are still being used widely today for archive purposes, development and live production systems. These include systems running on both the older VAX and later Alpha server hardware.
In this seminar we will discuss some options open to users , including software emulation of both VAX and Alpha running on standalone systems or within a virtualised environment. Also we will look into the options of migrating to Integrity Blade/Servers, running OpenVMS 8.4.
Will include a detailed review of the VAX and Alpha Emulator products available at the moment, looking at the Pro’s and Cons’ of each product and then look at the way the emulators are licensed and challenges running them in a virtualised environment. What sort of performance can be achieved, and when and where emulation should be avoided. Also, how to use emulation to improve system reliability, resiliency and recoverability.
The seminar is structured so that the first session will be a presentation of the topic area, the second session will include live demos showing how to move from a physical system to an emulator utilising bespoke tape handling tools. Leading to how an emulator evaluation is really a full test of system recoverability and so is really a DR test and finally taking a look at migration to Integrity server from VAX or Alpha.
